Ticher's Tips

Ticher's Tips

ACDelco wants to make sure your vehicle is well maintained so you can get where you want to go.

Proper lubrication of the engine

To maintain adequate lubrication of the engine of the vehicle:

  1. Check engine oil level regularly, preferably once a week
  2. Change oil and oil filter every 5,000 kilometers
  3. Consult the owner's manual to determine the degree of oil (API viscosity)  required for your vehicle
  4. Use ACDelco oil, certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API), it meets the standard required by General Motors.
  5. Do not add too much oil, the engine can failure if the oil level is above the mark indicating the correct range of operation.
  6. Do not mix synthetic oil with mineral oil.
Maintenance of the brake pad system
  • Once a year or every 15,000 kilometers perform a complete overhaul of the brake system
  • During maintenance process, request check of the brake master cylinder and cylinder actuator for each wheel, it is very important that no liquid leaks.
  • Similarly, it is necessary to check the pad wear, drums and rotors, the system pressure and the booster.
  • Require also a testing of the parking brake.
  • With respect to the brake fluid, request verification of the levels, which must meet the standards specified by the manufacturer. Replacement is recommended every 2 years or 50,000 kilometers
  • It is important to replace the caliper o ring. This will avoid problems of wear

Remember that a brake system in poor condition will cause an increase in braking distance and impact safety driving

Brake pads replacement
  • The friction material of brake pads and discs, Should NOT contact greases, cleaners or products of mineral origin because they may cause ineffective braking system. If the brake pads are contaminated with any of the above products, we recommend the replacement of affected material.
  • To change the brake pads, special tools must be used. This will avoid damage to the friction material, likewise, the torque calipers should be performed according to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Any failure in the brake system identified during the installation of new brake pads must be corrected to ensure proper system operation.
  • Always replace brake pads on both  wheel of cach axle
  • Always use the brake pads for the vehicle.
  • Always use new brake pads
Replacement of the belts

Periodic replacement is recommended as preventive maintenance, the incident with V-belts serpentine are given in the fourth year of service for. Periodically replacing the belts minimizes the risk of accidents caused by unexpected rupture of one of them. After all, it's much easier to periodically replace a belt than a broken belt
Installation

  • Make sure the belt is the correct size (width and length).
  • In the case of kits belts, replace the entire set.
  • New belts should not work with used belts because they present an uneven distribution of power, which will affect the components.

And alignment of the pulleys inspection

  • Control pulley alignment before removing the belt to replace.
  • The axes are not parallel or misaligned pulleys cause premature wear of the belts.
  • Do not use tools to force the removal or placement of the belts on their pulleys.
  • Check wear of the pulley slots
  • Check that cables are free of abrasive materials.
  • Check for rust, oil or grease on the pulleys. If any of these items and cleaning is not possible, you need to replace the pulleys.

Correct tension of the belts:

  • The correct tension of the belts prevent slippage between belt and pulley, which is the main cause in the belts failure
  • Belts should always run straight, but should not be too much stress.
Belts replacement

For optimal protection of the belts, most experts recommend replacing V-belts every three or four years, or every 57.000 or 76.000 km. A recommended interval for replacing serpentine belts would be every four years or 80,000 km. One of the most important factors affecting the belts is the tension when installed and during its service life.

Recommendations for belts

The first thing to be done before replacing the V-belt is a visual examination, if  it is worn, full of tiny cracks, has broken pieces of gum is stripped or otherwise damaged, it need to be replaced as soon as possible. Also, if a belt had contact with oil or is "glazed" (and shiny hard on the faces of the belt) needs to be replaced, any of these conditions can cause the heating of the band weakening it and increasing the risk of rupture.
However, a visual inspection is not a very safe method to determine the real condition of a belt, as there is internal wear undetectable to the eye. All belts are reinforced with strings, these are what keeps the belt's elasticity and strength. When a belt gets older, bending, heat and constant tension weaken the belt.
Belts eventually reach a point where they may face an unexpected incident. The belt can be seen as new on the outside and internally to be about to break because the strings have lost their force. Other factors to be considered in judging the condition of a V-belt are the mileage and time of the same
A V-belt is between three and four years or between 64.000 and 80.000 kilometers is near the end of its service life, when the mileage is high it is advisable to replace it, even if it seems acceptable.

The V-belt must be replaced by another of the same length and width as the original. A belt too long or too may not have the proper tension. A belt too wide or too narrow will not fit into the pulley
Once the V-belt is installed it must be adjusted according to the tension manufacturer's recommendations for the voltage. After adjusting the tension should be checked and adjusted again (if necessary).
On vehicles with serpentine belt, tension is usually adjusted automatically by a tensor, no additional adjustment is necessary.

If the engine twisted belts, the problem may be due to misaligned pulleys. The alignment can be controlled with a ruler

ACDelco Battery Care

How to install a battery?
For a proper installation of ACDelco battery we suggest:

  • When replacing the belt, check that the axis of the Water Pump ACDelco turn effortlessly, if it does not, the pump can be damaged.
  • If you find that there is oscillation during rotation of the pulleys, it is necessary to replace them immediately and recheck the water pump as it could have distorted the shaft.
  • The water pump should never be set on the shaft, if it detects this condition, replace it immediately, we suggest ACDelco water pump.
  • It is recommended not repair the cooling system parts, our suggestion is to replace them with new parts.
How to install ACDelco spark plugs

Disassemble

  • Mark or identify cables before removing. To reinstall correctly, remember that the boot sequence should always be the same, otherwise it may cause malfunction of the engine.
  • Use special tools to remove the spark plugs, if available, otherwise, twist and gently pull the spark plug cap without bending the cable. Do not pull violently spark plug wires.
  • Use the correct size wrench to loosen the plug. With a turn or two is enough.
  • Before removing the plug from its place, blow the dust that has accumulated in the seat of it.

Installation

  • If necessary, adjust the calibration of the new spark plugs according to the manufacture service manual, or use this catalog as an auxiliary fence. For this, use the tool for separating the electrodes of the spark plug to the correct calibration.
  • Screw the spark plug by hand until firm. Apply the specified torque (1/16 turn, 1/2 turn) by the manufacturer, or tighten 1/2 turn (180 °) for spark plugs seat gasket (washer) and 1/16 turn (15 °) to plug with conical seat (no washer).
Spark plug wire installation

Use ACDelco wire sets, a product of lower quality may have manufacturing defects or the quality of its materials may be lower and therefore will not last until the next replacement.

Carefully follow the installation instructions. Even a small change may affect performance.

  1. Check closely the original installation to the point of taking notes, drawing diagrams or taking pictures. Notice the specific order of the route and locations of the caps. Record the engine firing order or the number of the ignition coil located on the same coil or emission sticker is under the hood. If you can not find the information or in one or the other, you should get a service manual that contains such information. The same applies to models equipped with distributor.
  2. Thread spark plug by hand until they are  firm. Apply the specified torque (1/16 turn, 1/2 turn) by the manufacturer, or tighten 1/2 turn (180 °) for spark plugs seat gasket (washer) and 1/16 turn (15 °) to plug with conical seat (no washer).
  3. Sometimes it is difficult to determine the length of each original cable in relation to replacement cables (even if you use a factory original game)

You may have already completed most of the work before discovering that the cables that are too short or too long! Nobody wants to discover this, especially if the installation is particularly complicated as in a transverse V-type engine.
Then, instead:

  • Remove all wires and group them according to the cylinder bank from which they come (in the V-type engines).

The goal is to have a new group of relatively proportional to the old wires. The Look is an indication of the existence of a pattern, such as the fact that the cables of a bank may be mostly longer than the other and which side has the longest cables and shorter. Then begin to group the new cables to match the old, keep in mind that all cables from the new set will be slightly longer than the used cables

  • For the installation, start at each bank with the spark plug wire that is mounted on the lower fastened at checkpoints, first connecting cord to the plug and then to the ignition coil or distributor.
Installation of sealed oil filters
  1. The engine must be warm, raise the hood of your car and remove the cap oil intake.
  2. Rise  the vehicle taking appropriate security measures and unscrew the drain plug sump or reservoir, allow to drain all the oil, then reinstall the plug housing but first inspect the condition of the seals, gaskets, replace if necessary.
  3. Remove the used filter with the appropriate tool. In some cases, the use of special tools that will prevent the filter from being damaged, will be required
  4. Clean with a cloth the motor base cloth and make sure the gasket does not stick to the base, do not use tow. Apply a film of clean oil to the new packaging. Do not use grease on the packaging or other material.
  5. Install the new filter taking care of not stripping out (in large units may be necessary to fill the filter with clean oil before installing, check the owner's manual recommendations), after the filter gasket flush with the motor base , tight it by hand in accordance with instructions found in the filter or packaging thereofDo not squeeze or use tools to tighten.
  6. Down  the vehicle at ground level and fill the sump or reservoir with clean oil to the recommended level, reinstall the plug oil intake. Start the engine and wait a few seconds until the pressure returns to normal.
Check for leaks around the filter, crankcase cap or in  existing connections. Hand retightening if needed.
  7. shoot off engine and check the oil level, fill if necessary.
  8. Don’t discard the old filter or dirty oil into the drain or on the ground, observe environmental regulations applicable in your region. If the pressure indicator or the warning light on the dash do not turn off, turn off the engine and check the installation.
  9. If, after reviewing the installation, the indicator light remains on, it may be due to the following:

    • The indicator may be disarranged.
    • There are poor connections between pressure switch and indicator.
    • Possible erosion of the lobes of the oil pump
    • Possible obstruction of the suction strainer of the pump.
    • The pressure control valve is stuck in open position and the oil pressure rises.
Installing cartridge type oil filters
  1. The engine must be warm, raise the hood of your car and remove the oil intake cap
  2. Rise the vehicle taking appropriate security measures and unscrew the drain plug sump or reservoir, allow to drain all the oil, then reinstall the plug housing but first inspect the condition of the seals, gaskets, replace the if necessary.
  3. Screw vessel to drain oil, remove the entire assembly.
  4. Remove the used filter.
  5. Clean completely with oil filter bowl and allow to dry. Place the drain screw Do not use tow.
  6. Clean the engine base with a clean cloth and make sure the gasket does not stick above the base.
  7. Adjust the new filter with a new rubber gasket. In some applications it is advisable to pre-fill the oil tank filter, follow the recommendations of the owner's manual.
  8. Down the vehicle at ground level and fill the carter or reservoir with clean oil to the recommended level, reinstall the plug oil intake. Start the engine and wait a few seconds until the pressure returns to normal. Check for leaks around the filter, crankcase cap in existing connections and tight if necessary, using the appropriate tool.
  9. Shoot off engine and check the oil level, fill if necessary.
  10. If the pressure does not indicate the normalization or the warning light on the dash will not turn off, turn off the engine and check the installation
If, after reviewing the installation, the indicator light on, it may be due to the following:

    • The indicator may be disarrange
    • There are poor connections between pressure switch and indicator
    • Possible erosion of the lobes of the oil pump
    • Possible obstruction of the suction strainer of the pump.
    • The pressure control valve is stuck in open posotion and the oil pressure rises.
